The iPhone SE 2020 was a strange outlier for Apple. Fans had been asking for a cheaper iPhone for years, and the company finally satisfied those fans after a four-year wait from the original iPhone SE.
However, don’t expect Apple to bring out a new iPhone SE every year now. Contrary to the relationship between Apple’s rumors iPhone 13 Series and his iPhone 12 Family, it’s unlikely we’ll see any sequel to Apple’s “affordable” 2020 phone anytime soon.
Apple’s event on April 20th – marked “Spring Loaded” in the company’s invitation – is expected to be where Apple will present its products new iPad Pro, and we can see other devices like Apple AirTags, the iPad Mini 6 and a new Apple TV.
The iPhone SE 2 was not presented at last year iPad Pro Event in March 2020, and instead it came a touch later in April. But right now, it’s unlikely we’ll see an iPhone SE 3 at a separate event in April as well, and we’d be very surprised to see one in 2021.
Why don’t we see an iPhone SE 3 soon? There are a number of possible reasons, and while none of these are confirmed, we’re going to walk you through some of the reasons we think an iPhone SE 3 is unlikely to land in the near future.
1. It’s just too early
Our first reason is the fact that this would be a super fast turnaround for a new iPhone SE. The first Special Edition iPhone came out in 2016 when the brand experimented with a cheaper handset alongside the one iPhone 7 Series.
Then there was silence in this area for a long time. There have been some rumors about the iPhone SE 2, but initially with no clear indication of when we would see the phone. We ended up waiting four years so it doesn’t seem like Apple intends to make this a yearly affair.
There may be a faster turnaround for the iPhone SE 3 – so you essentially wouldn’t have to wait four years for a new model to arrive – but it’s not yet known what will happen.
2. There are no rumors
Before the iPhone SE 2 landed, we heard a multitude of leaks and rumors about what to expect from a new cheaper iPhone.
We may have named the handset the iPhone 9, but the handset eventually came out as the iPhone SE 2020 with a slew of leaks getting the correct info.
If we are looking to see a new affordable Apple handset, expect more secure information from at least some sources. There is currently nothing solid on the subject, which suggests that we won’t wait until 2022 at the earliest.
3. Where are the excess parts?
Another thing to consider is the fact that Apple used older models as the base for its iPhone SE phones. Older designs and parts were reused to make these cheaper phones.
For example, the original iPhone SE had the same design as that iPhone 5s, while the iPhone SE 2020 had the same design as that iPhone 8. Both phones came out at least two years after the models whose design they mimicked.
If this is to be a pattern for the SE range, we would expect the iPhone SE 3 to mimic the design of the iPhone X.This was the next design update Apple offered after the iPhone 8 iPhone XS, iPhone 11 and, to some extent, even for the iPhone 12 with a similar design, we’d think the company would want to get some more distance from that before the design is revived for the iPhone SE 3.
So if Apple plans to keep using older cellphone designs, features, and parts like this, we will likely have to wait a couple of years for the next model.
