We are in this strange phase of introducing a revolutionary technology in which two seemingly contradictory things are true at the same time: it has become clear that artificial intelligence is going to change the world. And the technology’s immediate impact is still so small that it’s almost safe to assume that won’t be the case.
Nowhere is this more evident than on university campuses.
The vast majority of tasks that have traditionally been used to assess – and more importantly challenge – students can now be easily outsourced to ChatGPT. This applies to the essay, the most classic homework assignment that students complete in humanities and social sciences courses. While the best students can still outperform the AI models, a combination of technological advances and rapid grade inflation means that students who settle for an A- or perhaps a B+ can confidently cheat to graduate, even at top universities.
