It seems that Democrats and Republics in Congress can agree, among other things, that they want to impose restrictions on the US tech sector. Members of the House and Senate have tabled at least five bills aimed at restricting the way big tech companies operate. The most notable of these efforts is the American Innovation and Choice Online (AICO) Act.

Rather than creating a more open and competitive online business environment, this bill targets a small number of large tech companies and threatens them with draconian penalties for vague and hard-to-prove violations of arbitrary competition standards. It is precisely these companies that have played a key role in shaping the modern IT economy. Their products and services are used by most Americans and millions of businesses big and small. This misguided attempt to shackle some of our top performing companies will threaten US economic recovery and national security.
