Three months after becoming CEO of Google Cloud, Thomas Kurian sought to shake up the cloud market and gain an advantage over its larger competitors Amazon and Microsoft. He launched a service called Anthos to make it easier for companies to simultaneously host their websites and applications in private data centers and the Google Cloud, as well as clouds operated by Amazon and others.

The move seemed to make sense. The two top-selling Google Cloud customers, Snap and Apple, had already taken a multi-cloud approach and hosted their data and apps with several different public cloud providers instead of relying on a single company. Other large companies using Amazon Web Services and Microsoft had also done so.

The catch with Google’s Anthos service is that customers need a more sophisticated approach to business application development and data management that is better suited to younger businesses than older ones. As it turns out, there are relatively few new …
