WhatsApp now allows you to move chats and photos from Android to iPhone

What’s happening

Apple and WhatsApp have made it possible to switch from an Android phone to an iPhone and transfer your chat history, photos and videos.

Why it matters

WhatsApp has over 2 billion active users worldwide and most of them use the app on Android. By allowing people to switch to iOS without giving up years of chat history, Apple could encourage even more people to switch to an iPhone.

If you use WhatsApp and want to switch from an Android phone to an iPhone, the fact that you cannot move your WhatsApp message archive to iOS becomes a major stumbling block. It may not seem like a critical issue, but there are over 2 billion people worldwide who use WhatsApp as their primary contact with friends and family. Switching to an iPhone usually means giving up years of photos and conversations in their WhatsApp message. my colleague Claire Reilly She even took two phones around to solve the problem: her new iPhone and an old Android phone with her WhatsApp history and media.

Luckily there is now a workaround: Switch to iOS, an Android app developed by Apple. The app is already helping people to transfer their contacts, calendar, SMS messages and photos from Android phone to iPhone. Starting Tuesday, you can now also move your WhatsApp data from Android to iOS.

The majority of WhatsApp users use Android. And it will be interesting to see if this convinces more people who use WhatsApp to switch to an iPhone.

Move to iOS encrypts WhatsApp data that needs to be authenticated on your iPhone before you can continue where you left off. A beta version of WhatsApp for Android currently offers support for the process.

As for the requirements, here’s what you need:

  • iPhone running iOS 15.5
  • Android Phone with Lollipop (Android 5)
  • The latest version of Move to iOS from the Google Play Store
  • The latest version of WhatsApp for Android

Once your WhatsApp data is on your new iPhone, you can back it up using iCloud.

This news comes a week after Apple’s announcement new iOS 16 additions to its Messages app This includes the ability to undo or edit sent messages.
