The blockbuster news came in the late afternoon when Amazon announced that Jeff Bezos was stepping down as CEO of Amazon, the company he had built from a business in his garage to a global giant. In assuming the role of CEO, his successor will be none other than AWS CEO Andy Jassy.

With Jassy moving to his new position at the company, the question immediately arises of who will replace him to run AWS. Let the games begin. The rumor mill named Peter DeSantis, vice president of global infrastructure at AWS, and Matt Garman, vice president of sales and marketing, among others. Both are members of the Bezos elite leadership team known as the S-Team, and both would make sense as Jassy’s successors. Nobody knows for sure, and it could be any number of people within the organization or even someone outside of it. Amazon wasn’t ready to comment on a successor as the handover was months away.
