Wemo introduces its first HomeKit-exclusive video doorbell

Wemo today unveiled the first of many alleged new products that will work with HomeKit as well as Matter once it becomes official. Perhaps the most interesting and surprising of these is the new one Wemo Smart Video Doorbell.

Given the shortage of HomeKit-compatible doorbells, this new product could do with just Netatmo and Logitech Offers are the other two serious contenders at this stage *. In addition, the Wemo is also compatible with HomeKit Secure Video (HSV), which means that the Netatmo is eliminated from this race, with only Logitech offering this option as well.

* The Yobi B3 does not support any form of recording that Robin Proline is both expensive and low definition (only 720p) and the Arlo Essentials requires an Arlo hub.

The Wemo offers possibly the largest field of view of a video doorbell at 178º vertically while offering dual-band WiFi connectivity (2.4 & 5.0 GHz) as well “improved night vision” and motion detection via the camera’s 5 MP sensor. The complete field of view is 178º (vertical), 140º (horizontal), 223º (diagonal).

As you can see in the picture above, the depth of the camera can appear quite large, although this picture also shows the included angle bracket. In reality, the depth of the camera is only 35.5mm / 1.4 in, with a 43.2mm / 1.7 in width, and 124.5mm / 4.9 in in height.

Like the other two products mentioned, the camera requires a wired power supply (16-24 V AC), so there is no battery option as such. It doesn’t come with a light that only Logitech offers, but because it’s HSV compatible, you get facial recognition, packet recognition, and smart notifications.

One thing that may seem strange is that the company page for this product only lists the technical specifications “Supports thread”. I suspect this could be a mistake and should really be read “Supports the matter”, as well as other specs I’ve already outlined, although it’s entirely possible that it could either act as a thread router or even a border router once Matter finally arrives, who then opens the camera to other platforms like Amazon Alexa and Google Home for example.

The Wemo Smart Video Doorbell can be pre-ordered now via Wemo website, priced at $ 249.99.
