The National Anti-Scam Centre, or Scamwatch, has posted an image of the scam in which a text, pretending to be from Optus, encourages recipients to click on a link where they can purporting apply for compensation from the telco.
“Hi there, we apologise for yesterday’s network outage,” the malicious text reads.
”We are offering compensation for all customers impacted. Apply here.”
Scamwatch warned against clicking on the link, telling anyone who receives it to ignore and delete the message.
“If you receive a message like this, it’s a scam,” it said.
“There’s no compensation on offer. Don’t click the link. Ignore and delete.”
Optus has come under increasing pressure to offer its millions of customers compensation for yesterday’s network outage.
The outage prevented customers from using phone and internet services and had a significant impact on health and emergency providers, including triple zero.
