Warner Music Group settles legal dispute with AI music company and forms joint venture

Warner Music Group (WMG) will form an artificial intelligence (AI) music company with technology start-up Suno, a year after it sued the company in a landmark case.

Under the settlement agreement between the two companies, Warner will allow users to create AI-generated music on Suno using the voices, names and likenesses of artists who have signed up for the program.

The record label, which represents artists such as Dua Lipa, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran, was among several music giants such as Sony Music to sue Suno and a similar platform called Udio.

AI-generated content has been controversial, with many artists expressing concerns that it could undermine human songwriters.

Starting next year, Suno will introduce new advanced and licensed models for its generative AI music platform, allowing users to create music based on simple descriptions, Warner said in a statement.

The Massachusetts-based company has around 100 million users and was founded two years ago.
