VMware has done some reorganizations in its Telco group since its former GM for Telco and Edge Cloud Shekar Ayyar left the company in May to start a SPAC.

Sanjay Uppal is now the GM of the group that has been renamed VMware’s Service Provider and Edge Business Unit. Uppal was a co-founder of the SD-WAN company VeloCloud and has been with VMware since 2017 when VMware bought VeloCloud.

Uppal told Fierce, “We have combined the VeloCloud business that has grown from SD-WAN to SASE. And we took this SASE business and combined it with our Telco and Edge Cloud business. “

Uppal said his group views their telecommunications work in terms of three levels:

  • the “underlay” of connectivity, whether wireless or wired;
  • the Secure Access Service Edge (SASE); and
  • the application layer above

He said his group focused on the middle tier – the service edge – which he said “most people don’t talk about.” VMware is instrumental in adding compute power to the edge …
