VMware recently announced that their popular products, VMware Workstation 17 Pro and VMware Fusion 13 Pro, will now be available for free for personal use. This news was shared by Michael Roy, Product Line Manager for VMware‘s Desktop Hypervisor products, bringing relief to many students, hobbyists, and casual users who utilize these tools.

VMware Workstation is a Type 2 hypervisor that allows users to run virtual machines on x64 Windows or Linux computers. This was VMware‘s first product and has been widely used by individuals. The latest version supports Windows 11, OpenGL 4.3, and offers features like 32 vCPU VMs with up to 128GB of RAM. On the other hand, VMware Fusion is a Type 2 hypervisor designed for macOS systems, enabling Macs with Intel or Apple M-series chips to run virtual machines with various guest operating systems.

Fusion Pro and Workstation Pro now have two licensing models: free subscriptions for personal use and paid subscriptions for commercial use. The previous versions, VMware Workstation Player and VMware Fusion Player, are no longer in production and are not available for download. Existing customers will continue to receive support based on their existing end-of-life and end-of-guidance dates.

The new Desktop Hypervisor app subscription can be purchased from Broadcom Advantage partners or new reseller Digital River for $120/year, providing ongoing product updates for the duration of the subscription. The only noticeable difference between the free and paid versions is a text indicating personal use only within the product interface, with no functional disparities.

Those interested in downloading VMware Fusion Pro can do so on the VMware website, while VMware Workstation Pro is also available for download.
