Broadcom Inc. announced updates to its VMware Cloud Foundation private cloud platform, integrating networking, storage, and management capabilities. The new version of the vSphere hypervisor targets customers seeking basic virtualization technology. Cloud Foundation offers a unified platform for compute, networking, storage, management, and security, with Kubernetes as a native service. License portability allows users to move subscriptions between on-premises and cloud environments without penalties.
Broadcom aims to simplify VMware‘s portfolio by making VCF the top private cloud platform. The company has consolidated divisions under a general manager to provide integrated products, support, and services. VCF now supports storage manager vSAN Max, stretched clusters, and VCF Edge for edge use cases. Quick-start templates, enhanced networking features, and live patching for security updates are included in the updates. VMware Avi Load Balancer offers self-service load balancing as a service.
New sync management capabilities synchronize out-of-band changes and enable complete environment management through SDDC. Live patching of the ESXi hypervisor without downtime, dual compute unit support, and enhanced security features are part of the updates. VMware vSphere Foundation version 5.2 includes zero-downtime ESXi patching and self-service infrastructure access. A Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Service with asynchronous updates and a simplified console are also available.
Broadcom plans to release VMware Cloud Foundation 5.2 and VMware vSphere Foundation 5.2 in the third fiscal quarter. Prashanth Shenoy, VP of marketing for cloud platforms at VMware, emphasized the focus on delivering an integrated product to simplify platform building, scaling, and upgrading.
