VMware reveals the launch of App Volumes 3.0

On February 2, VMware announced the release of App Volumes 3.0. I spoke with Sachin Sharma, Product Line Manager for VMware App Volumes, End-User Computing, about the new features in this version. App Volumes aims to simplify the delivery and maintenance of applications to end users. The traditional process of installing applications can be slow and complex, leading to high support costs. App Volumes is a real-time application delivery platform that virtualizes applications above the operating system layer, allowing them to be attached to a user’s virtual desktop.

One of the new features in App Volumes 3.0 is AppToggle, which enables per-user permissions and installation of applications within an AppStack. This reduces the number of AppStacks to manage and lowers memory requirements. AppCapture with AppIsolation provides a command-line interface for application capture and updating, streamlining application packaging, deployment, and isolation. AppScaling with Multizones allows for integrated application availability across multiple data centers, eliminating the need for additional software to replicate AppStacks.

The new version also introduces an integrated application, user management, and monitoring architecture that combines application and user environment management with monitoring. A unified administration console offers a centralized view for managing applications, users, and monitoring, with the ability to recognize patterns for easier workflow creation. App Volumes 3.0 will be available as part of VMware Horizon Enterprise or as a standalone solution.

There are three editions of App Volumes 3.0 available for purchase. The Standard edition costs $60 per user and includes AppStacks, writable volumes, and integrated user environment management. The Advanced edition, priced at $100 per user, includes enterprise management features like AppToggle, AppCapture with AppIsolation, and AppScaling. The Enterprise edition, costing $120 per user, adds application monitoring on top of the features in the Advanced Edition.

For those interested, a demo of App Volumes is available on YouTube under the title “App Volumes Many applications in seconds.”
