VMware has introduced Identity Manager, a service designed to centralize authorization for applications across various environments and devices. This new service promises secure and convenient one-touch access for the mobile/cloud era. Identity Manager works with AirWatch Adaptive Access to provide single sign-on access to web, mobile, SaaS, and legacy applications on iOS and Android devices without the need for app code changes or app wrapping.

The service includes a token generator and integrates with existing identity providers. It also features an enterprise app store, app usage analytics, and a conditional access policy engine to enhance security. By addressing BYOD risks such as incorrectly configured apps, persistent app security vulnerabilities, and the Dark Web, VMware aims to offer the flexibility and productivity benefits of the mobile/cloud era.

Symantec also introduced new services to tackle BYOD concerns in early June. By creating device profiles linked to user identities, unlocked devices can serve as seamless authentication factors. Kevin Strohmeyer, Senior Director of Product Marketing at VMware, emphasizes the importance of personal device security, as individuals are more likely to report stolen devices and initiate remote wipes to protect personal and corporate data.

Identity Manager is currently available for VMware‘s Blue and Yellow management suites from U.S. data centers and is expected to be offered as a standalone product. The company plans to expand the service to Europe and the Asia Pacific regions in the third quarter. Pricing starts at $150 per year, with a free trial accessible through AirWatch.

VMware’s Identity Manager offers a comprehensive solution to address the challenges of the mobile/cloud era, providing secure and seamless access to applications across different platforms. By integrating with AirWatch Adaptive Access and existing identity providers, the service offers a convenient single sign-on experience while enhancing security with features like an enterprise app store and conditional access policy engine.

As the use of personal devices in the workplace becomes more prevalent, identity and access management solutions like Identity Manager are crucial in ensuring data security and productivity. With VMware aiming to expand the service to additional regions and offer it as a standalone product, organizations can take advantage of the benefits of centralized authorization for their applications.
