VMware cuts ties with AWS intermediary, hands control to Broadcom

Broadcom has terminated Amazon Web Services’ ability to resell VMware Cloud on AWS, leading to customers now only dealing directly with VMware through Broadcom. There were speculations about AWS urging users to migrate from the service to native AWS offerings, resulting in Broadcom CEO publishing a blog to address these rumors.

VMware Cloud on AWS can now only be purchased through Broadcom or authorized resellers, not directly through AWS. Existing AWS customers with active subscriptions will continue to be billed by AWS until the end of their contract. AWS informed partners of this change and offered sessions to discuss moving VMware customers to native AWS services.

The joint venture between VMware and AWS, VMware Cloud on AWS, operates on dedicated bare-metal infrastructure and is managed by VMware. The service is based on VMware Cloud Foundation and was previously available through both VMware and AWS, but Broadcom has now made it exclusive to ensure direct customer relationships.

It remains uncertain how VMware Cloud on AWS users will react to this change, as some preferred being billed by AWS along with other services. Microsoft has offered a migration plan to VMware customers through Azure VMware Solution, including incentives like Azure credits and extended security updates, but analysts suggest the benefits may not be as lucrative as they initially seem.

AWS expressed disappointment over losing the ability to resell VMware Cloud on AWS but stated their commitment to working with Broadcom to support shared customers. They aim to assist customers in leveraging the best cloud services for their business needs, including VMware Cloud on AWS.
