VMware Inc. today announced an expansion of its Sovereign Cloud initiative aimed at helping enterprises identify and engage with trusted national and regional cloud service providers.

The initiative was launched last year for customers with specific requirements for data sovereignty and data access and control controls. Many VMware customers must comply with regulations that severely restrict access to their data, meaning they have no choice but to use trusted cloud providers in the regions where they do business.

The expansion adds new designated partners of VMware Sovereign Cloud to the list, namely Ionos SE, Saudi Telecom Co., Sopra Steria AS and the UAE Telecom and Digital Government Regulatory Authority. This brings VMware to 14 participants in the initiative, covering various sovereign regions in the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Saudi Arabia, etc., according to VMware.
