Veeam enhances backup software to offer support for Proxmox, a VMware alternative

Data protection provider Veeam has announced that it will be adding support for the open source virtualization platform Proxmox in the future. This decision was made in response to strong demand from their small and medium-sized business customers and service providers. Proxmox Virtual Environment integrates the KVM hypervisor and Linux Containers (LXC) and offers software-defined storage and networking capabilities.

Veeam plans to make the general availability of Proxmox VE support in Q3 2024, with a live demonstration planned for the VeeamON 2024 event in June. This move comes as more companies are exploring alternative virtualization options due to changes in the market, particularly after Broadcom acquired VMware. Veeam is focused on expanding support for new platforms to give customers more choices, as they recently added support for Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager.

Veeam currently supports VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Red Hat Virtualization, and various cloud platforms. The addition of Proxmox VE support is aimed at addressing the challenges faced by customers in keeping their data safe and secure while ensuring their businesses continue to run smoothly. Proxmox CEO Martin Maurer expressed his satisfaction with the decision, stating that many customers are recognizing Proxmox VE as the hypervisor that aligns with their business goals.

The inclusion of Proxmox VE Backup in Veeam Data Platform further emphasizes the importance of customer choice in data management. Proxmox recently launched Proxmox Backup Server 3.2, which supports backup and restore of VMs, containers, and physical hosts, along with features like incremental backups, deduplication, compression, and encryption. This collaboration between Veeam and Proxmox aims to provide customers with a comprehensive data management solution that meets their evolving needs.
