Some important details have become known about Valve’s Steam Deck handheld console meets PC – in particular about the desired level of performance and whether you can actually install your own NVMe SSD to update the storage.

In one Video interview by IGN, Valve stated that the Steam Deck’s 800p display, which allows for a refresh rate of up to 60Hz, targets 30Hz for gameplay. In other words, the Nintendo Switch comparisons could go a little deeper than the surface as many games on this platform run well below 60 frames per second. However, since most PC games offer a plethora of graphical settings to fine-tune, the Steam Deck should be able to get smoother gameplay at the expense of graphical quality if you’re willing to cut down a few settings depending on the game, of course .

Valve also announced that the standard M.2 2230 size SSDs used in the Steam Deck are crucial are not soldered to the board. In the world of gaming laptops, this usually means efforts have been made to ensure that M.2 SSDs can be easily swapped out for a larger one that you may already have on hand or that may not be as expensive as Valve charges for memory upgrades. An article by IGN confirms that you can technically remove and upgrade the memory in a Steam Deck yourself, but the focus is on repairability, not on increasing the optimization factor for the everyday user. These SSD slots may not be as accessible as we hope, like the PS5’s slot covered with an easy-to-remove plastic shield, but we don’t know for sure as Valve hasn’t shown the inside of the Steam deck.

Valve hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat said IGN “We focused on repairability and tried to make it as repairable as possible. But it’s really meant for people who know what they’re doing and have the experience with it. ”Unless Valve overstates the difficulty, some people might be better off opting for a larger microSD card to store more games – a much simpler one Surgery.

The specifications for the Steam Deck mention that after all, the M.2 SSD is “not intended for end-user replacement”. This won’t stop some people – but it may void a guarantee. IGN does not directly confirm whether or not attempting to swap SSDs will void your warranty, although the publication likely says so. The edge has reached out to Valve and we will update this post when we receive confirmation of how attempting to upgrade memory could affect warranty status.

The Steam Deck is now available for booking, and those who made a reservation first will be the first to receive their orders from December 2021. Reserving a reservation requires a $ 5 investment that will be used towards the final purchase. However, if you haven’t already, The console is currently expected to be available for orders in the second quarter of 2022.
