Health Professions Education Week took place from March 11-15, 2024, with VA medical centers nationwide holding events to celebrate the contributions of faculty, trainees, clinical staff, and veterans involved in health professions training. The VA trains over 120,000 health professions trainees annually in various disciplines, making it the largest provider of healthcare training in the country. Various centers, from Puerto Rico to Las Vegas, held activities highlighting the importance of education and training for better healthcare for veterans.
At the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System in Michigan, two students received awards for demonstrating excellence in their educational activities within the VA. VA Caribbean Healthcare System in Puerto Rico focused on humanism in medicine during Health Professions Education Week, with events that addressed healthcare disparities and attitudes that aid in minimizing barriers to care. VA Southern Nevada Health Care System in Las Vegas recognized participants in health professions training, with hundreds of health professions practitioners trained each year.
The Minneapolis VA Health Care System opened the Interprofessional Education and Collaboration Center, providing a dynamic learning environment for healthcare professionals to share knowledge and collaborate on best practices. VA Marion Healthcare System in Illinois recognized two nurse practitioners in their NP training program. These events and recognitions are essential in advancing the VA’s mission of training future healthcare professionals for VA and the nation.
The collective efforts of everyone involved in health care training at VA medical centers are crucial for advancing the VA’s academic mission and maintaining its role in clinical care.
