Truecaller, a popular app that helps users identify and block unwanted calls, has introduced a new feature that allows users to record their voice for use with its AI Assistant. The company has partnered with Microsoft’s Azure AI Speech to generate an AI version of the user’s voice based on the recorded clip. This feature aims to add a touch of familiarity and convenience for users while showcasing the power of AI in transforming the way we interact with digital assistants.

Raphael Mimoun, Truecaller’s Chief Product Officer and General Manager, highlighted the innovative nature of this capability in a blog post. The AI Assistant, available in select countries, assists users by detecting incoming calls and providing information about why the caller is reaching out. Users can then decide how to respond, either by answering the call themselves or letting the Assistant handle it.

In the past, users could choose from a set number of voices to represent them in the app. Allowing users to record their own voices is a step towards further personalizing the service. Microsoft’s Azure AI Speech also offers a personal voice feature that enables users to record and replicate voices for specific use cases, such as voice assistants. However, this feature is currently available on a limited basis.

Microsoft has implemented measures to protect users’ privacy and prevent misuse of the personal voice feature. Voices generated by Azure AI Speech Personal Voice automatically receive watermarks, and users must obtain full consent from individuals being recorded to use their voices. Spoofing is strictly prohibited according to Microsoft’s Code of Conduct for the service.

It will be interesting to see how well the personal voice feature will perform in comparison to a user’s own voicemail message. The introduction of this feature by Truecaller and Microsoft highlights the ongoing advancements in AI technology and the increasing customization options available to users in their digital interactions.
