Oracle is cutting thousands of jobs as the US technology company looks to convince investors that its bet on AI infrastructure will pay off.

The $420 billion company, headquartered in Austin, Texas, began laying off employees on Tuesday. Thousands of Oracle’s 160,000 employees are expected to leave the company.

Michael Shepherd, a senior manager at Oracle who was not affected by the cuts, posted on the social media site LinkedIn that there had been a “significant workforce reduction” at the company.

Shepherd said the decision affected “senior engineers, architects, operations managers, program managers and technical specialists with extensive expertise in cloud infrastructure, government and sovereign cloud…”
