Upstage, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) independent software vendor (ISV) in South Korea, has announced a strategic collaboration agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS), a collaboration that will expand their partnership to leverage cloud technologies and services to help customers unlock new generative AI capabilities. Through this agreement, Upstage will be able to leverage AWS’s security infrastructure and guidance on best practices to apply generative AI responsibly, while also making use of AWS AI services such as Amazon SageMaker.
In March 2024, Upstage launched its small language model SOLAR MINI, a more agile model that can be easily customized for linguistic tasks in Korean, Japanese, and English, with plans to include Thai in 2024. The SOLAR models make it easy for customers to start using generative AI without training models from scratch, and with the backing of AWS, Upstage ensures maximum protection of user data.
This collaboration will allow Upstage’s customers in various industries, such as education, healthcare, legal, finance, and telecommunications, to create custom LLMs, chatbots, and knowledge bases using the SOLAR models. For example, Shinhan Securities is developing a financial knowledge database system, while Law&Company is working on ‘SOLAR-Legal’, a model for legal support in public organizations and citizen services.
Through the AWS ISV Acceleration Program, Upstage will be able to market its generative AI solutions globally, addressing the growing demand for AI-powered solutions for enterprise applications. The company will also participate in the AWS Washington DC Summit to collaborate with industry leaders and accelerate its mission to deliver better results and unlock new opportunities in the cloud.
Upstage, founded in October 2020, aims to increase work efficiency with its large language models and document processing engines. Their SOLAR product delivers GPT-4 level performance with speed and cost-effectiveness, offering a versatile and affordable alternative to larger models. Additionally, their Document AI solution uses OCR technology to automate workflows and process unstructured data, reducing operational costs for customers.
