return Made it to second place on the UK sales charts at launch but debuted much lower than other major PlayStation exclusive titles. It’s worth noting that, in a frustrating way, the UK’s bestseller list is all physical sales – and therefore an important piece of the puzzle is missing as consumers continue to gravitate towards digital shopping.
To be fair, the roguelike developed by Housemarque has been hard to find in stores as not many supermarkets stock copies and the game is out of stock online. It’s also possible that Sony didn’t make many devices as pre-order numbers may have been low prior to the first round of previews, which only sparked interest in the title a few weeks ago. And of course we shouldn’t overlook the price, which at £ 69.99 has always proven to be a difficult pill to swallow.
However, this is only one area where important digital sales are excluded. So it’s definitely not the end of the world – and to be honest, our friends list has been filled with Returnal players all weekend.
The rest of the UK sales charts are really boring, although it’s been a better week for box sales in the UK: Grand Theft Auto V. and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Both saw sales increasing week by week. Last week’s winner Nier: Replicantfell to 22nd place after a 73 percent drop in sales Terminator: Resistance improved crept into place 37.
