The upcoming release of Ubuntu 24.10 in October will see a significant change for NVIDIA users, as the default desktop session will now utilize Wayland instead of X11. This shift marks a departure from previous versions of Ubuntu, which defaulted to the GNOME X.Org session when using NVIDIA’s proprietary graphics driver.
The decision to switch to Wayland by default for NVIDIA users comes as a result of the improved support and maturity of the official NVIDIA Linux graphics driver. With the upcoming NVIDIA R555 driver set to be released soon, Wayland support is expected to be in great shape, with features like explicit synchronization being available out of the box.
Canonical’s Daniel van Vugt, a member of the Ubuntu Desktop team, recently made a change to the GDM session manager to remove the NVIDIA-prefers-X11 patches. This means that NVIDIA Linux users will now find Wayland as the default desktop session when using the official NVIDIA graphics driver.
The shift to Wayland for NVIDIA users is a significant step forward for Ubuntu 24.10 and will provide a more seamless and improved user experience. Additionally, Ubuntu 24.10 will ship with GNOME 47 and other updates for this post-LTS release, further enhancing the overall user experience for Ubuntu users.
