French publisher Ubisoft has launched an R&D experiment called “Teammates“, which uses generative AI technology to transform NPCs into so-called “living companions.”
During a closed-door briefing at Ubisoft’s Paris studio attended by game developers, Ubisoft claimed the bite-sized experience was an example of how its development teams will “drive the future of generative gaming.”
Ubisoft is currently accelerating research and development in player-focused generative AI and previously used the emerging technology to create neo-NPCs –described by the publisher as interactive characters, not programs– together with Nvidia.
The company introduced its Neo-NPCs prototype in March 2024 and has since doubled down on generative AI to create its first playable experience.
