Donald Trump said Friday he would order all federal agencies to “IMMEDIATELY STOP” all use of Anthropic’s artificial intelligence technology.
The U.S. Department of Defense and Anthropic reached an impasse, with neither side backing down as the deadline for an agreement passed Friday afternoon. The Pentagon had demanded that the AI company relax the ethical guidelines for its systems, otherwise there would be serious consequences.
U.S. defense officials have been pushing for weeks for full access to the capabilities of the company’s Claude AI system, which they say can help protect the country, while Anthropic has resisted using the product for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons systems that can kill people without human intervention.
