While the Trump administration declared war on one of its leading artificial intelligence companies last week, its Commerce Department also distributed draft new rules that would regulate the export of cutting-edge semiconductors essential to developing AI.
Just as the Trump administration’s decision to overturn the Pentagon’s declaration classifying Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” has been expanded to other U.S. government agencies, posing an existential threat to the company at the forefront of deploying AI tools, the administration is considering giving itself the power to decide on a case-by-case basis whether countries get access to the chips essential to building the data centers that train and operate AI models.
