Transport companies get fine exemption as AI drives truck ban in the Interior West

Nick Parker, founder of Sensor Dynamics, said the technology tested over the past 18 months was more advanced than technology used on regional highways in NSW or around Sydney’s Port Botany.

He said that while testing the cameras in Melbourne’s inner west, he was shocked at the size and frequency of heavy vehicles using suburban roads. “There are nice residential streets with semi-trailers driving down them,” he said. “It’s really not good at all.”

Information about the trucks detected by the AI-powered cameras will be accessed by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.

The images captured by the cameras will be analyzed by road AI and transmitted to an Equinix data center in Melbourne, which will be accessed via a secure portal by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, the agency responsible for regulating and licensing all vehicles weighing more than 4.5 tonnes.
