Last month, TF International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the eagerly awaited AirPods Pro 2 won’t ship until the fourth quarter of 2022. This news likely upset a number of consumers, Apple fans, and others for finding out Apple would release the Premium True Wireless Stereo (TWS) earphones next March when the company often introduces new accessories. A release in the fourth quarter would give Apple time to offer the product for the next Christmas season.
Kuo expects the AirPods Pro 2 to be released in the fourth quarter of 2022
Kuo sent a message to customers this morning describing further leaks about the continuation of Apple’s first premium version AirPods Model. AirPods Pro, released on October 30, 2019, are getting on in years, and the device’s battery life is less than the “up to” 30 hours available with the recently released third-generation AirPods.
Kuo’s note was received from AppleInsider and includes some new forecasts from the analyst. For example, he says that the AirPods Pro 2 support Apple Lossless and will also have a new design. In the above note he shared last month, Kuo said Apple could remove the stem from the AirPods Pro 2 so that the device would look similar to the Beats Fit Pro.
Adding Apple Lossless to the AirPods Pro 2 requires Apple to somehow integrate the feature into the Bluetooth connectivity. That’s because AirPods use Bluetooth to stream music, which means only the AAC codec is supported. Apple’s higher quality ALAC codec may require the company to develop a way to stream music directly to the AirPods and bypass Bluetooth.
Apple’s VP of Acoustics, Gary Geaves, recently stated that Bluetooth is holding back improvements to the sound quality of the AirPods, including the possible addition of spatial audio. Geaves tells What kind of hi-fi? that the team working on AirPods need more bandwidth in order for the device to reach its audio potential.
The manager said, “Of course wireless technology is critical to delivering the content you talk about, but so is things like the latency you get when you move your head and if that’s too long between you and them Sound changing or staying static will make you feel pretty sick so we have to focus very much on getting the most out of bluetooth technology and there are a number of tricks we can play to get some of the benefits to maximize or bypass the limits of bluetooth. “
He added, “But it’s fair to say we want more bandwidth and … I’ll stop here. We want more bandwidth.”
Kuo Says AirPods “Replicate iPhone Success”
The new charging case for the AirPods Pro 2 will likely contain speakers that emit a sound so that the user can find the case and accompanying AirPods in case they are lost. A leaked photo that we showed you in October reportedly revealed the AirPods Pro 2 charging case, which included speaker holes on the bottom. And rumor has it that the new AirPods Pro 2 charging case has some built-in AirTag features.
Kuo says he expects AirPods to offer some health management features in the future. You can see how that Apple Watch was able to increase sales thanks to Apple’s promotion of its health monitoring features.
The analyst estimates that Apple shipped 27 million AirPod pairs better than expected in the fourth quarter, an increase of more than 100% from the third quarter and a 20% increase from last year. Kuo cited the October release of the AirPods 3 and a price cut for the AirPods 2 for the strong Christmas sales results. He compared the selling power of AirPods to that of the iPhone when he said, “AirPods replicate the success of the iPhone.”
