Tidal is reinventing itself today to step up its efforts to take on such as Apple Music and Spotify. The enterprise announced today that it is launching its very first tier of free music, two new tiers of HiFi, and more. The company is too announcement new ways to pay artists.

In a press release, Tidal announced a new free tier that is only available in the US for the time being. This ad-supported tier gives customers access to Tidal’s entire catalog of Tidal music and playlists with “limited breaks”.

There are also two HiFi plans that users can choose from, Tidal HiFi and Tidal HiFi Plus. Here are the details:

  • TIDAL HiFi: For $ 9.99 / month, this tier provides uninterrupted access to high fidelity sound quality. With TIDAL HiFi, members have offline functions and access to functions such as TIDAL Connect and My Activity, which offer individual daily listening insights.
  • TIDAL HiFi Plus: For $ 19.99 / month, HiFi Plus offers everything the HiFi tier has, in addition to introducing fan-centric royalties and direct payments to artists. HiFi Plus will continue to provide access to industry-leading immersive sound formats (Dolby Atmos Music & Sony 360 Audio Recordings) and Master Quality Authenticated (MQA), as well as early access to exclusive offers and future features.

One of the keys to today’s Tidal overhaul is a payment system that ensures artists are paid fairly for their music. First off, Tidal is introducing monthly direct payments to artists as part of the Tidal HiFi Plus tier.

The company states that each month a percentage of the membership fees from HiFi Plus subscribers are directed to their top streaming artist, which is featured in their activity feed. This direct payment to the artist is in addition to the streaming license fees.

Tidal is also revising its licensing program:

From 2022, TIDAL will take a different approach to license fees. In this new model, royalties attributed to HiFi Plus subscribers are not aggregated. Instead, royalties are paid based on the actual streaming activity of individual HiFi Plus subscribers, as opposed to the industry-standard method of aggregating streams, which allows fans to play a bigger role in the success of their favorite artists.
