ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont’s largest-ever private employer arrived on this day in history.

IBM officially began operations in Essex Junction on February 25, 1957. It was a major economic boon for the state and would be a key site for ushering in modern computer technology for the world.

The IBM campus would grow to over 700 acres, and at its peak, employed over 8,500 people.

The plant was operated by IBM until 2015, when it was sold to GlobalFoundries.
