Insecure cloud computing services can pose a great risk to companies as they are regularly a target of cyber criminals. Researchers have shown how vulnerable or misconfigured cloud services may be after hundreds of honeypots have been deployed in what is supposed to look like insecure infrastructure, some of which took only a few minutes to be compromised by hackers.

Cybersecurity researcher at Palo Alto Networks Set up a 320-node honeypot around the world made up of several misconfigured instances of popular cloud services, including Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), Secure Shell Protocol (SSH), Server Message Block (SMB), and Postgres databases.

The honeypot is also there Accounts configured with standard or weak passwords – just the kind of thing cyber criminals look for when trying to break into networks.
