A pioneer of the short video format, Vine is considered one of the most influential – albeit short-lived – social media platforms.
The app, which allowed users to record six-second videos on a continuous loop, exploded in popularity after its launch in 2013, spawning a plethora of viral comedy skits and internet memes. At its peak, it reached 100 million monthly active users and helped launch the careers of influencers like Logan Paul.
It was acquired by Twitter – now X – shortly after its founding, but closed in 2017 after the platform failed to add up.
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is now backing an attempt to bring back a revamped version of the popular platform with a new philosophy: to be the short-form video app that offers “freedom from AI intrusions.”
