On October 11, organizers of the Free Food Fridge in New Paltz publicly announced that they would be closing for the winter. The refrigerator, located next to the Village Hall parking lot, was emptied and padlocked that morning. There was a sign on the front that said “THIS IS NOT FOREVER.” In an Instagram post, organizers explained that they are working toward a spring reopening date, but there is no concrete plan yet.
The pause has caused concern among those who donate to and rely on the refrigerator. They’re wondering why the fridge is closing now, as winter approaches and about 18,000 Ulster County residents who rely on SNAP are suffering delayed benefits following the recent government shutdown.
