Australian researchers will spend the next two years developing an AI model that can safely and effectively support young people’s mental health. There is growing concern that existing chatbots are fueling delusions and isolating the most vulnerable.

More and more young people are turning to generative AI platforms like ChatGPT for companionship, reassurance and mental health advice. One study estimated that up to a third of young people have used AI tools for emotional support.
