Stack, a product of The Google Area 120 incubator, was a handy app that allowed users to create or import PDFs and store them in different categories known as Stacks. These categories included tax, insurance, medical, and more. The app would automatically pull data from the PDF files to suggest titles, add searchable details like date and amount (for receipts), and even had a notes section.
However, Google has recently announced that Stack functionality has been integrated into the Google Drive app. This means that users who were relying on Stack to organize their PDF files will need to move them to Google Drive. Google has made this transition easy with a two-step process. Users can find a folder called Stack Export in Google Drive, where all their PDF files from Stack will be stored.
Unfortunately, users who had meticulously categorized and tagged their PDF files in Stack will find that this organization did not carry over to Google Drive. The files will simply be stored in the folder without any additional categorization or text.
For those who do not wish to keep their documents in Google Drive, there is an option to export them from Stack to another location. This process is more laborious but still possible. After transferring the PDF files, users can go to the app Settings > Delete page in Stack to remove their organized documents.
As a former Stack user who found the app to be particularly useful, it is disappointing to see it go. However, the integration into Google Drive ensures that the functionality of Stack will still be available to users, albeit in a different format. Ultimately, users will need to adapt to this change and decide whether to continue organizing their documents in Google Drive or seek out an alternative solution.
