ESET cybersecurity researchers have found that phishing has been the most common type of incident for businesses of all shapes and sizes over the last four years.
Of all the incidents reported in the ICO’s Data Security Incident Trend Report, phishing was by far the most frequently reported with nearly 2,700 incidents (2,694), roughly double the second-placed unauthorized access.
With just over 1,000 incidents, ransomware was the third most reported incident type, followed by verbal disclosure of personal information and hardware/software misconfigurations.
In recent years, the number of reported cybersecurity incidents increased from 573 reports in the first quarter of 2019 to 714 in the second quarter of 2022. Most of the reported incidents – 737 – occurred in the second quarter of 2020, which ESET says could be due to Covid-19 restrictions, force people to work remotely.
