In a typical short-form reveal, the leaker simply wrote “Fold3 269g” – two words that give us interesting information about the upcoming foldable product. If the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 really weighs 9.48 ounces, it’s also the lightest in the range yet, and a promising change in trajectory given that Galaxy Z Fold 2 (282 g) was actually heavier than the original Galaxy Fold (9.7 ounces).
To be clear, even at 269 g the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 hardly belongs to the category of feather-light smartphones, and in my experience something over 200 g feels a bit heavy in the pocket. For comparison: It is almost 18% heavier than both iPhone 12 Pro max (228 g, 8.03 ounces) and Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (229 g, 8.07 ounces) which most people would not consider light.
However, there are good reasons the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold phones are heavier than most smartphones: you essentially get both a phone and a tablet in one, and that requires more stuff across the board: two screens, one Structure thick enough to be resilient when deployed and enough battery to power the thing, to name a few. With this in mind, it is an impressive technical achievement for Samsung to make the weight of the flagship foldable and comparable to other smartphones.
Why is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 lighter than its predecessor? Well, along with the usual generational design improvements, we know that the battery in the new model should be from a slightly lower capacity than its predecessorWith a speed of 4,380 mAh, the 4,500 mAh cell used in the Galaxy Z Fold 2 should be relieved a little.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to be in July or August this summer and will almost certainly be alongside the company’s other foldable device, the Z flip 3. Thanks to Screenshots allegedly from a marketing videoWe know Samsung could include the company’s first under-screen camera and that the handset also supports the S Pen.
While we didn’t see any price leaks, as the original Galaxy Fold and its sequel are $ 1,980 and $ 1,999, respectively, it would be a big surprise if the new model cost a lot less.
