Japan’s Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has recently announced an agreement with IBM to collaborate on the development of quantum technology. This partnership aims to create a quantum computer with 10,000 qubits, surpassing current capabilities. AIST hopes that this collaboration will advance Japan’s quantum computing ecosystem. Additionally, Fujitsu has sold a gate-based superconducting quantum computer to the Institute, designed to scale to hundreds of qubits.

In a separate development, HPE CEO Antonio Neri confirmed that the company has secured a $200 million deal to provide the Institute with servers equipped with Nvidia’s latest H200 accelerators. These servers will enhance the Institute’s supercomputer ABC1, which currently utilizes 960 A100 GPUs and 4,352 older V100 processors. While the exact purpose of this new equipment is unknown, AIST’s focus on advancing technological innovation for Japanese industry and society indicates various potential applications for these powerful computers.
