When news of an email hack broke out at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), many were surprised at the level of security that would apply to one of the largest and safest law enforcement agencies in the world.

But on Saturday, November 13th, 2021, the email system sent tens of thousands of messages warning people of a possible cyberattack. News reports indicated that the fake emails appeared to have come from a legitimate FBI email address.

Following the reports, the FBI released a statement about the incident by one @ ic.fbi.gov Email account. The statement highlighted that the affected hardware was quickly taken offline once the problem was discovered, and encouraged the public to be careful with unknown senders and report suspicious activity to them or the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
