It was announced earlier this afternoon that the E3 consumer electronics show held in LA for June is canceling its in-person event and going completely virtual. What are the chances that Apple will make WWDC 2022 its third all-virtual conference as companies need to make more distant event decisions due to a surge in COVID-19 cases?

We are right in the middle of it CES 2022who returned for a personal event in Las Vegas this year.

Pretty much in the weeks leading up to the show, though Number of companies that have withdrawn with the Omicron COVID-19 variant growing around the world and in the US.

And of course, a lot of the press and consumers didn’t go to CES in Vegas this year and took part virtually.

Six months before their E3 show, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced today that it will transition from a personal event in LA to a purely virtual experience. As reported by VentureBeat:

“Due to the ongoing health risks associated with COVID-19 and its potential impact on the safety of exhibitors and attendees, E3 2022 will not be held in person,” ESA said in a statement to GamesBeat. “We are still incredibly excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon.”

9to5Macs Take – Will Apple Go Virtual for WWDC 2022?

Apple could be a little more flexible than the ESA or CES / CTA when it comes to the deadlines for deciding whether to go virtual or not. However, one trend that has been clear over the past two years is that Apple is playing it safe.

It was one of the first companies to close its retail stores around the world at the start of the pandemic (and keep it up) and the company’s employees still work mostly remotely.

Previously, it was planned that employees would return to Apple Park in Cupertino from February 2022, but in December Apple delayed this to a “yet to be determined” date.

Interestingly enough, Apple has its today Annual general meeting for March 4th and it will be virtual due to the pandemic.

With a face-to-face WWDC bringing people from around the world together, the uncertainty of COVID-19 to beware, and Apple’s track record, another virtual WWDC seems most likely.

There’s always a chance the spring and summer pandemic could improve, and depending on when and how it looks, Apple could opt to allow a version of face-to-face presence. However, the odds are likely in favor of a virtual WWDC 2022 as Apple has to make its decision sooner rather than later.
