The family of a Florida Institute of Technology student who was fatally shot and killed by police and school security officers on campus last week is opening an independent investigation into the fatal use of force.

Police responded shortly before 11 p.m. on the Melbourne campus on Friday after a man armed with a knife reportedly assaulted students.

A Melbourne Police officer and school security confronted the man, who was identified by police as 18-year-old Alhaji Sow, in a campus building. Both fired their guns and beat him after Sow was allegedly “stormed” at the police officer with a “sharp weapon”, Melbourne police said after the incident. He died on the scene.

Sow’s family has since hired a law firm to investigate the incident and investigate why the school’s security officer did not use non-lethal methods to overpower the teenager, lawyers said Wednesday.
