Last week, Atlassian cut 1,600 jobs worldwide and blamed it on AI. Late last year, University of NSW student Ahnaf Rakeen changed his degree from a Bachelor of Design to a Bachelor of Architectural Studies. His work as a freelance graphic designer had become less creative and began to dry up as clients themselves used AI.
“I realized that it wouldn’t be worth it for my university studies… it’s so bad, imagine that once I finish my studies I wouldn’t be needed at all,” says 19-year-old Rakeen.
“AI can’t just be on site and measure parts of buildings and draw everything to scale,” Rakeen says of his move into architecture in November. “I feel like this is going to take a lot more time… until the AI is able to do this.”
