They say for every door that another one opens closes, and the Executive Shuffle at VMware certainly proves the old chestnut is true. Four months after Pat Gelsinger stepped down as CEO to return to head Intel, the virtual machine pioneer announced yesterday that long-time manager Raghu Raghuram would take over the role.
That started another change when COO Sanjay Poonen, who some had speculated might get the job as CEO, announced on Twitter yesterday afternoon he left the company after seven years.
Coincidence? We don’t think so.
Holger Mueller, an analyst at Constellation Research, said he was surprised Poonen didn’t get the job, but maybe the VMware board rated Raghuram’s product focus higher. “At 50 he is [would have been] A long term solution and he did an excellent job on the EUC (End User Computing) side of the product before becoming COO. I think it’s still not VMware’s core business, ”he said.
