In a budget-busting jump from SAP to Oracle, West Sussex County Council is tripling its raid on capital assets such as buildings to fund its “transformational” ERP project.

The current budget for the authority’s long-running project is £27 million, more than ten times the original budget of £2.6 million when it began almost seven years ago.

Last year, The Register reported that the council used money from the sale of capital assets – including a former fire station – to finance the massively expanded budget. Although the central government has allowed this since 2016, this approach should not be used to ease ongoing budget pressures, experts warn.

In documents presented to a council committee last week, officials said they expected the use of funds from the sell-off to triple in the current fiscal year compared to last year.
