With the just announced Toshiba M-Series, there’s a new Fire TV for the holidays, starting with the Toshiba M550KU LED 4K UHD Smart Fire TV. With 48 discrete dimming zones for improved HDR performance, it represents an important first for Amazon’s smart TVs.
The new M series is Toshiba’s successor to the popular Toshiba C350 Fire TV, this is also our favorite Fire TV model of the best tv, and is at the top of our list of best televisions under $ 500. The new Toshiba M-Series TVs will be sold this month through Best Buy and Amazon.
In addition to a range of dimming zones – a feature previously sorely lacking on Fire TVs – Toshiba’s new M-Series set is also one of the first to offer hands-free voice interaction. This feature that was previously only offered on the newest Amazon Omni Fire TV It looks like it will be a major feature on all premium Fire TV models in the future.
With Alexa built in, you can turn on the TV, adjust the volume, choose a favorite app or show, or search for new content without ever having to use the remote control. Far-field microphones embedded in the device allow you to use the TV as a smart speaker, so you can control not only the TV but also smart home devices and Alexa skills like an Amazon Echo.
While Amazon’s Omni Fire TVs offered Dolby Vision HDR support, we were somewhat disappointed with the HDR performance in our tests and reviews of the set. Without local dimming, a TV can only do so much with any HDR format, and the inclusion of Dolby Vision in the Omni series felt like an unfulfilled promise. We hope that the new Toshiba M-Series delivers where the Omni failed.
In addition to local dimming and hands-free voice interaction, Toshiba is strengthening the M series with a sleek design with a narrow bezel, more flash memory for faster performance, and improved brightness and color quality on the display.
The Toshiba M-Series Smart Fire TVs will be available this month in three sizes with 55-, 65- and 75-inch models. The 55-inch model retails for $ 799, the 65-inch model retails for $ 999, and the largest 75-inch model retails for $ 1,1999.
