Frustration is growing over AI-powered road safety cameras alerting drivers to passenger behavior, and a Perth grandfather is offering help to help people appeal their violation.

The cameras were deployed across Western Australia last year and use artificial intelligence to detect potentially illegal mobile phones and seat belt abuse. After checking by the police, fines were issued to the driver.

About 36,000 seat belt violations have been reported since last October, with fines starting at $550 and four demerit points.

But after backlash from motorists who were penalized for their passengers’ behavior – including young children and neurodivergent people who incorrectly wore seatbelts without the driver’s knowledge – the state’s highway safety commissioner has ordered a review of the process.
