The next iPhones are slated for this fall and seem to be doing well. A recent video from EverythingApplePro shared a number of rumors about new features and improvements. That includes a smaller notch, better cameras, improved audio, and more. For more information on this, see Gordon Kelly’s Forbes post. Here.
But a rumor jumped up to me over the other: new colors.
The first iPhone was released with an aluminum back and a black base. Since then, every iPhone has had a black or almost black option, sometimes called black or space gray, or – most recently – graphite on the iPhone 12 Pro.
One iPhone, the iPhone 7, was even painted jet black. This was one of my favorite iPhone designs. The phone had an aluminum back, but it was so polished it looked like glass.
Well, it looks like Apple is going the other way with the iPhone 13 Pro, which will end up in a deep, deep gray finish, according to Max Weinbach, who worked with Filip Koroy of Everything Apple Pro on these latest rumors, that is described as borderline black. It is assumed that this will be a matte finish as this is the finish on all current Pro models, which means it might look more like metal than glass.
The current graphite iPhone 12 Pro is an engaging and subtle shade of gray that is a much lighter shade than the glossy black of the iPhone 12. It looks like the next model will be a lot darker and deeper than graphite.
Apple has a gift for flashy colors for its products, so we should expect something spectacular. The hero color, if you will, is Pacific Blue this year, I would say, as was the iPhone 11 Pro that stood out, which was midnight green. We get used to the fact that Apple changes its colors annually, even if the main design changes less often.
So the other Weinbach / Koroy proposal is interesting …
Orange iPhone Pro, anyone?
Apparently an orange iPhone Pro is being developed. That sounds fantastic, I think, but a bit surprising. Apple doesn’t shy away from flashy colors, that’s right. After all, the gold-colored iPhone 12 Pro is too gaudy for some eyes, although to me it is fantastic and deeply appealing.
However, it almost always saves its lighter colors for the normal rather than the Pro.
And Apple has come very close to an orange iPhone, already in the form of the iPhone XR in coral, which had a lobster orange look.
Anyway, if the thought of a matte orange iPhone appeals to you as much as it does to me – and to be clear, I like it a lot – then before we go any further, I should tell you, it’s not coming.
According to Weinbach, it is unlikely to start even though it has reached a certain stage in the production process.
Well, I suppose this isn’t a definite no, but it seems my hopes for an orange iPhone are doomed right now. Maybe next year.
Other colors that are expected are the current gold, silver, and perhaps Pacific blue.
I’m sure more details will be known by the fall when the new phones are expected.
