A new report from Waterwise and BSI analyzed and compared global data center capacity with water security levels and found that data centers are among the top ten commercial water users worldwide.

The report found that just a single 1MW data plant uses over 25 million liters of water for cooling purposes each year, equivalent to the annual drinking water supply of 400 people.

“Data centers are critical to digital life, particularly leveraging the opportunities presented by AI, but their growth must not come at the expense of water security,” said Murray Sayce, head of sustainability solutions at BSI.

“Technology is becoming increasingly central to our lives, so now is the time for international collaboration to integrate sustainable practices into data center development and operations.”
