This week’s court battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI’s Sam Altman has the potential to not only neutralize OpenAI and its ambitions, but also send financial shockwaves throughout the artificial intelligence ecosystem.
The case brought by Musk, which opened with jury selection in an Oakland, California, courtroom on Sunday evening (AEST), revolves around Open AI’s transformation last year from a nonprofit to a for-profit company.
Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015 and donated around US$38 million ($53 million) to establish a vehicle for developing artificial intelligence that can be altruistically shared with the world and puts the public good above all commercial interests.
